What of the Real Alcoholic?

I believe the idea behind an open meeting was to allow nonalcoholics to come to meetings to observe and learn how an alcoholic stays sober.  I do not believe it was ever intended to allow nonalcoholics to share in meetings just because they are persons who no longer desire to drink. Open meetings are still for alcoholics only. Moreover, the conversation is to remain on alcoholism and recovery from alcoholism. Sadly, it seems as if people with other problems than alcoholism come to some meetings.

They say their alcoholic, but their conversation and actions have nothing to do with recovery from alcoholism or staying sober.  Consequently, alcoholics who are there to stay sober must listen to the ramblings that have nothing to do with drinking and learning how to stop. Closed meetings are for alcoholics only.  And only people who are alcoholic are allowed to attend these meetings. The conversations at these meetings resolve alcoholics to find solutions to their drinking problem.

It seems that some groups think an open meeting means that anyone is allowed to attend the meeting and share.  Whether they have a mental illness, drug problem, or are seeking reform, they think if they label themselves alcoholic, then they can share about whatever. I believe AA was created for alcoholics and alcoholics alone.  If you have other problems, you should go to other meetings or professions that deal with those topics.  We should not water down AA to accept anybody who claims to be an alcoholic yet their actions and their words talk of another problem.

It would be my hope that AA meetings stick to their agenda.  Hence helping the alcoholic stay sober.  AA is not in the business of reform, mental illness, or religious conversion.  Our sole purpose, as AA is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics find sobriety.  We should enforce open meetings to remain for alcoholics sharing only as it was intended. This is not a breaking of a tradition; it is the sole purpose of every AA meeting.  If we allow other topics to creep in, what will happen to people who only suffer from true alcoholism?
