‘WHAT
DOES GOD LOOK LIKE’? The
Bible says..”let us make man in our image, in our
likeness….”(Gen. 1:26). When
God spoke these words, is the ‘our’ He refers to, other gods, or, is
He referring to His heavenly hosts? The
use of the words, ‘image’ and ‘likeness’, indicate to me, that we not
only look like God, but are also of the same ‘character’.
Which brings me to my next question…”why did God create us”? I have asked that question of several knowledgeable persons
over the years with this response; the general consensus is that God was in need
of companionship, of a more independent nature.
The ‘heavenly-hosts’ that he had created, and that surrounded Him,
were for the most part, ‘yes men’! The
only flaw in that analogy is that Lucifer, (who was the most beautiful of the
angels) rebelled against God, who cast him out of heaven.
Not only that, but Lucifer took 1/3 of the angels with him.
So, the ‘yes-man’ theory doesn’t compute completely.
What
confounds me is that in order for man to exercise his free will and
independence, he had to disobey God, which subsequently led to the fall of man
from God’s grace. Because man
exercised his free will, he was condemned to a life of sin ever after.
Somehow, this doesn’t seem quite fair…..but then I suppose that the
‘disobedience’ factor is a strong point of the argument.
Actually, it appears that ‘disobedience’ is the one character flaw in
man that ticks God off more than anything else.
That whole business of Adam and Eve munching on that forbidden fruit was,
for all intents and purposes, a necessary act.
Had man not fallen from God’s grace, and in doing so, brought about
man’s sinful nature…..there would have been no need for Jesus to have
suffered and died for our sins….and, allowing us the choice of salvation or
condemnation. Even Satan played an
integral part in creating man’s need for savior.
Without Satan, there would have been no temptation; without temptation,
man wouldn’t have sinned; and without sin, man would be in no need of a
savior. You think?
There
are many references throughout the Bible that allude to God having a human form.
“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as He was
walking in the garden in the cool of the day….”(Gen. 3:8).
God using his hands is mentioned several times.
Jacob saw God, ‘face-to-face’. I
believe that the Holy Spirit is God’s messenger, for the Holy Spirit
encompasses everything
around us. What do I think
God looks like? I think that were
we able to see God, we would see Him as we were able to perceive Him.
That is, I believe everyone would see Him as they were most able to
comprehend. Since I have strong
Native American heritage, I would see God as red-skinned and with long flowing
raven colored hair. But, blue eyed.
God most assuredly has blue eyes. Jesus
said..”to see me, is to see my father…”
Of course, that brings up the question. ”what did Jesus look like”? Again, I believe that each of us conjures up a mental image
as to the physical appearance of both God and Jesus, according to our own
desires. One
day, we will see them face-to-face and thus, the questions will be answered.
Until then, what is most important is that we feel them in our hearts.
If you truly wish to know what God looks like…just look around at His
wondrous creations; raw nature in all it’s splendor paints a most vivid
picture of what God looks like…. at least to me anyway.
