WHILE CONGRESS PASSED THE WAR
POWERS RESOLUTION last night, the weeks and months ahead hold many important
decisions regarding our policy toward Iraq. This newsletter features ways
you can use e-thePeople to participate in this important process.
CHANGE STARTS WITH CONVERSATION, and e-thePeople is abuzz with Iraq-related
discussions. Here are a few examples:
"Debating the Future of America: Byrd and Kennedy"
http://www.e-thepeople.org/a-national/article/12496/view
How will history judge American action -- or inaction -- in Iraq?
"What's motivating our campaign against Iraq?"
http://www.e-thepeople.org/a-national/article/12485/view
Why are opponents to a war so suspicious of the Bush administration's motives?
"Stepping Back on Iraq: What are your hopes and concerns?"
http://www.e-thepeople.org/a-national/article/12447/view
Figuring out what the right policy is first requires discussing some
"root-level" questions.
CONNECT LOCALLY WITH OTHERS WHO CARE ABOUT IRAQ. e-thePeople is helping
sponsor two sets of international "meetups," simultaneous face-to-face
meetings in cities around the world for people who want to discuss -- and take
action on -- issues related to Iraq. The meetups are organized using
technology from a new company called Meetup.com. Details at:
http://www.e-thepeople.org/a-national/article/12553/view
International "No War with Iraq" Meetup is Monday, October 28 @ 8:00PM
International "Protect Freedom" Meetup is Monday, October 28 @
7:00PM
Meetups are already taking place monthly in hundreds of cities on hundreds of
topics. They take place in local bars, coffee shops, bookstores, fast food
joints, local restaurants, etc. -- and Meetups are free. The Iraq Meetups
will continue on the 4th Monday of every month for as long as people feel they
are needed.
CONTACT CONGRESS. Our research suggests that writing letters through e-thePeople
is an effective way for you to make your opinions known to policymakers.
Tell your elected representatives how you would like to see our policy toward
Iraq evolve:

DON'T WANT TO GO IT ALONE? Sign one of two petitions started on e-thePeople
relating to Iraq. The first, "Avoid War With Iraq," argues that
military action should be pursued only when there are "grave threats to
America's vital national security interests or profound humanitarian
crises," and that strong evidence exists for neither. The second,
"Time for Strong Action Against Saddam Hussein," argues that we need
to remove Hussein and "restore a government to Iraq that does not threaten
the security of the world."
The petitions were written by David Callahan, Director of Research at Demos, a
progressive public policy organization in New York City, and Nicholas Provenzo,
Chairman of the Center for the Advancement of Capitalism, a Washington-based
conservative think tank.
