White Clubs Can't Jump: Is High School 'Caucasian Club' Too Divisive?
Can 'Caucasian' clubs coexist with Black students unions? In Oakley, CA,
students have recently formed a 'Caucasian club' that was summarily condemned by
the local NAACP. 'Larix Laricina' wonders what e-thePeople thinks about this
club; in particular, he's curious if it truly would be racially divisive, as the
NAACP has said (http://e-thepeople.org/article/25635/).
'Truthaddikt' thinks the NAACP is right - creating a 'Caucasian club' would only
reopen old wounds (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88264/).
And 'contentess' isn't sure what purpose the club would serve:
"We live in a society where power belongs to whites. That's the world we live
in. That's why black students need to have groups. That's why white students do
not need them; there are valid reasons for black students to have a group -
because they face specific and institutionally-sanctioned discrimination."
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88927/
But not everyone is convinced. Minorities have their own organizations and
events, says 'chickmcd,' and if this sort of division by race is permissible,
then so is the creation of Caucasian-centric groups (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88464/).
USPSA-TY agrees (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88634/);
going a step further, 'Bradg' thinks that the call for 'equality' can often veil
an ulterior motive:
"People say they want a color blind society, but in reality they really want
preferential treatment. Otherwise they would demand race and color blind
organizations and events."
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88884/
And really, says 'amharkness,' if the NAACP wanted to help the situation, it
would embrace the club as a way to increase cultural diversity - not to mention
that they might be able to influence the goals and methods of the club itself
and in the end make it much less 'racially divisive' (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88404/).
How the club operates is one of the more important issues, agrees 'A Proud
American':
"As long as this "Caucasian only" club does not promote violence and cross
burning, or try to brainwash whites that whites are superior, I don't have a
problem with it. In fact, it would be refreshing if this club promoted
acceptance of other races. Now THAT would be novel for a "Caucasian only" club."
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88304/
'Larix larician' provides a quote from the club's founder that seems to support
this sort of open atmosphere (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88538/).
And speaking as a minority, says 'revroper,' the club is fine - as long as it
subscribes to a policy of acceptance and tolerance (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88621/).
But 'fenbass99' is more concerned with the founder's motives:
"My fear is that this person is only starting this club to make a political
statement, like the boy who wants to join the girl scouts or the man who wants
to work at Hooters. If this club is for real and it promotes a healthy
understanding of whites and our new role, "to embrace all races and stay on
common ground," then more power to them. But if it's just some high school kid
looking for attention or extra credit then I say don't let some idiot set racial
harmony back 50 years or more."
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/89102/
To some users, though, the 'Caucasian club' is nothing more than an unfortunate
side effect of living in an open society. 'Zarch' thinks that as long as we let
people form clubs (as we should, he says) then we're going to have the
occasional odd or unpleasant one crop up (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88837/).
And while 'onecentjay' believes the way to end discrimination is to stop
categorizing in general, he says that as long as we tolerate some of it, we must
tolerate it all, whether or not we agree with a given organization's intentions
(http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88411/);
'bocamp22' agrees (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/88586/).
Given this general consensus - that categorization by race is unfortunate but
that we should allow people to officially associate with whomever they please -
'Gordon Oliver' has a compromise in mind:
"So here's the rule I would propose. Any cultural club is ok, but it cannot
exclude others based on race/culture/etc. It could, however, exclude others
based on open disrespect. Note that this would exclude the "Caucasian club" or
"black club", but permit the "urban club" or "suburban club", or even the "West
African" and "West European", or even "Latino.""

Drafted: Can Wesley Clark Lead the Democrats to Victory in 2004?
Retired General Wesley Clark joined the race for the President this week,
sparking across the board media attention. 'Mikew' highlights some of his
qualifications ('A new face, southern, military experience including
nation-building, fresh thoughts on the war on terror') but is curious about his
domestic policies and whether or not he can raise enough money to be a serious
contender in the 2004 race (http://e-thepeople.org/article/25464/).
'Bocamp22' definitely thinks so; Clark is a very intelligent and 'changes the
landscape' of the current debate, given his experience in foreign affairs (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/86839/).
And 'frankbuster' believes that the similarities between Clark and President
Clinton - both are Rhodes Scholars, both are from Arkansas - are certainly a
positive sign (http://www.e-thepeople.org/comment/86769).
'Michael Kenny' also finds Clark exciting, but he thinks that entering the race
this late might make Clark a better Vice Presidential candidate (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/86735/).
That's a great idea, says 'mikew,' especially if Clark were to combine with
Howard Dean, as it would shore up the latter's stance on foreign policy (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/86739/).
While 'Michael Kenny' likes this combination as well, he does think that Dean
and Clark might butt heads a little:
"I'm getting the impression that Clark has a big ego, probably essential in his
chosen lines of profession (general, CNN pundit, president), but it might cause
for conflict if he is not the man in charge. That is the only barrier I see to a
Dean/Clark ticket, since Dean seems to have quite a large head on his shoulders
as well."
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/86745/
According to 'mmglist,' though, this arrogance is worse than 'Michael Kenny'
makes out - in his view, it makes Clark unpredictable and impetous, leading him
to object to Clark as a presidential candidate (http://e-thepeople.org/article/25456/).
And although 'Louzke' doesn't see Clark's arrogance as damning, he does bring up
a different problem - it's hard to pin Clark down on the issues (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/87017/).
'Tonytiger07' agrees:
"He's already flip-flopping on crucial issues like our invasion/occupation of
Iraq which last week he first said 'he would have probably supported it' but he
came out the next day and said 'he was against the war.'"
http://e-thepeople.org/comment/87721/
As far as 'Kathy Chapman' is concerned, though, this is to be expected; she
believes that Clark is only running interference for the DLC and the Clintons,
so that they can guarantee that Dean doesn't get the nomination (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/86990/).
'Griot' disagrees, though, pointing out that pragmatically speaking, Clark may
be the democrat's best bet:
"He appears firm on the environment; a woman's right to choose; anyone casting
doubt about his commitment to national security would be laughed at. There is
an "Anybody But Bush" ethos circulating within the Democratic Party and among
progressives, and Clark seems the ticket. I'm sure many have come to a pragmatic
outlook for 2004... Could anyone be more electable in the field than General
Clark?"
http://e-thepeople.org/article/25461/
But 'Richard Bradley' thinks this policy of 'anybody but Bush' is doomed to
failure. As he sees it, merely running against a candidate is an extremely
negative campaign, and while the party regulars will be there to vote (say, for
Clark), the democrats will only alienate independents (http://e-thepeople.org/comment/87505/).
'Onecentjay' disagrees, noting that part of pragmatism of supporting Clark stems
from his ability to appeal to mainstream voters, such as himself:
"As a moderate republican, I would consider voting for the guy from what I know
about him at the moment (which isn't much beyond his resume admittedly). I have
to tell you, though, Dean and Kucinich are centrist-repellant. I would never
vote for either of them, and in a race between them and Bush, I would
undoubtedly choose Bush. In a Clark/Bush race, my inclination is to go for
Clark. So if your obsession is to get Democrats back in power, Clark is your
man."
