MARKING TIME

Did you ever consider the myriad of ways in which we use time?  On the plus side, we save time, have a good time, march in time.  We take time to rest…. we take time to enjoy recreational activities.  We make reservations for specific times to dine at a fine restaurant, or to see a play.  We surround ourselves with timepieces in all shapes and sizes.  We wear them on our wrists, carry them in our purses and pin them to our lapels.  Our automobiles have clocks on the dash……..we are literally surrounded by clocks and timepieces.  What would we do without alarm clocks?  Keeping appointments would be difficult, (at best) without our trusted timepieces.  Clocks tell us when to get up, when to start work, when to break for lunch, when to stop work and when to go to bed.  Nearly everything we do during an average day is regulated by the clock.  Today, our lives would be a chaotic mess without clocks to keep us on schedule.  It’s difficult for me to imagine how people in days of old managed their lives without the aid of clocks.  On a sunny day, one could calculate the time of day by observing the shadows lengths.  Of course, on cloudy days that method was ineffective to be sure.  My grandfather had a unique ability to know, fairly accurately, the time at any given point just by instinct.  On the minus side, we often kill time, waste time, experience bad times and lose track of time.  We never seem to have enough time to do the things we enjoy; yet time just drags by when we are bored or faced with a grueling task to perform.  When we are very young, we can’t wait to grow up so we can do all the things ‘big people’ do.  Then, as the years roll by, we find ourselves wishing time would slow down.

In a few days, my 62nd birthday will descend upon me bringing with it, the age old question;  Where in hell did the time go?  How did I manage to get to this age so quickly?  Why, just yesterday, I was a happy-go-lucky eighteen year old!  This old man staring back at me from the mirror is an imposter…..a cruel joke!  In my heart and mind, I’m still that eighteen year old boy with the same eagerness and passion that I once felt, so long ago.  I pray that I never lose that youthful exuberance and joy of living that I still possess.  There are those who would look upon my playful actions as those of a foolish old man, or even consider me a senile old coot……well, poop on them!  I love cartoons and animated features….I enjoy playing video games or just strolling through the streets of Santa Barbara with my young friend, and ‘checking out’ the beautiful people there!

Yes, I am MARKING TIME, but not because I am nearing the end of it, rather I am regaling at the beginning of each new day.  Making the best use of each moment that passes.  Time is a precious gift and I use it with care and appreciation.  To sum it all up……….”take time to smell the roses”.
