“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” ****************************************** At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols. Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction. The function of wisdom is to discriminate between good and evil. All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing.
I believe that ignorance is the root of all-evil. And that no one knows the truth. When I do well, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.
The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature
Lighthouses are more helpful than churches. Religions are many and diverse, but reason and goodness are one. This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. If the concept of God has any validity or any use, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of Him. A religious awakening, which does not awaken the sleeper to love, has roused him in vain. We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another. I have an everyday religion that works for me. Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line. My country is the world, and my religion is to do well. I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life. I believe in the equality of humans; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow creatures happy. It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense. I feel no need for any other faith than my faith in the kindness of human beings. I am so absorbed in the wonder of earth and the life upon it that I cannot think of heaven and angels. There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: Music and cats
If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat. How you behave toward cats here below determines your status in Heaven. Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true. To succeed, we must first believe that we can. The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. When we blindly adopt a religion, a political system, a literary dogma, we become automatons. We cease to grow.
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. Love at first sight is easy to understand; it's when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle. Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction. We need not think alike to love alike. Love doesn't make the world go 'round; love is what makes the ride worthwhile. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. (These are quotations from various authors, philosophers, poets and celebrities.)
