Charity Doesn’t Cost a Cent

Whenever I think about those in need, I find myself offering help.  Before my injuries, my greatest contribution to charity was generally financial offerings to organizations I believe do follow the purpose.  In the aftermath of my chronic nerve damage, I am no longer able to work and make lots of money.  Consequently, I have had to be willing to receive charity from others too do things I could no longer do.

In a way you could say that I was getting payback on all the times I donated to charity.  Interestingly, the charity work I remember the best, is the time I help feed the homeless in the food shelters.  I only did it about three or four times, but even twelve years later, I still remember the fond memories of seeing someone be grateful to have food.  More joyous, I felt my true purpose was being fulfilled as I offered my time to help make meals and take care of the less fortunate.

There was a black gay man who used to work at Kmart.  He was very flamboyant and outspoken.  However, I was very impressed with his ability to dictate and convince workers of how to do their job.  The reason I bring him into this story is that he was at the food shelter the last time I was there.  He actually was getting his degree in nursing, but he came there for free to stand up for sick children.  He was not paid for his medical expertise; still, he offered the most compassionate loving help.  He would never be paid, yet he knew it was most important to take care of the poor.

I have no idea where that man is today.  Regardless, with my weakened condition, I find that this shows me new ways too do charity.  It does not matter how poor or destitute a person is, they can always do something that is helpful to another.  I believe the true sense of charity is helping those in need.  A rich man may have all the money in the world; however, it will do him no good if his mind is lost.  Ironically, the poor person who has survived drug addiction, insane childhoods, and horrible abuse can show that man compassion.

As long as I never lose my mind, it does not matter what part of my body does not work.  As long as I’m able to think, read, and contemplate, I can offer kindness and gentle words in the greatest form of charity, A charity from the heart, A charity of true gratefulness, A charity of God’s holy spirit- too share with another soul.  I am never too handicapped until, I’m unwilling to accept help, and ask for it.  In asking for help, I’m allowing someone else the gift of charity.  I could think of no greater gift to give to my fellows.  Too those who live to do charity, and its never even a second thought. I applaud YOU!
